Antibacterial.
An antibacterial is a substance that acts against bacteria by either slowing down its growth or killing it. Antibacterial compounds are classified as either natural or synthetic, depending on the basis of their chemical origin.
Most antibacterials today are semisynthetic modifications of various natural compounds, for example penicillin. They are also classified based on biological activity and are divided into two groups: bacteriostatic agents, which stop or slow down the growth of bacteria, and bactericidal agents, which kill bacteria.
The term antibacterial is commonly associated with antibiotics, however nowadays it represents other compounds such as antifungals and antiseptics, which prevent or slow down growth of bacteria in the infected area. Antibacterials can be administered topically with drops or ointment, ingested orally or in more serious cases, intravenous administration may be used.
Antibacterial drugs can be used to treat a number of bacterial infections, helping to speed recovery time. The drugs work through two main biological mechanisms: bactericidals directly kill the bacteria and bacteriostatics prevent them from multiplying. Successful treatment using antibacterial drugs depends on a number of factors such as the location of the infection, host defence mechanisms and properties of the antibacterial.
Prulifloxacin is an orally administered antibacterial that has a powerful antibacterial action in the treatment of urinary tract infections and is not only effective at treating first effective episodes, but also in repeated and more chronic infections.
Urinary tract infections develop when part of the urinary tract becomes infected by microorganisms, such as bacteria, from the digestive tract. Usually the bacteria enter the urinary system through the urethra (although in some cases it can enter through the bloodstream), clinging to the urethral opening and multiplying. In many cases there is no obvious reason why the urinary tract becomes infected, however some women find they develop it after sexual intercourse.
Mycobutin is an antibacterial drug that is used to prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection in people with HIV. MAC infections are caused by two similar types of bacteria - mycobacterium avium and mycobacterium intracellulare. Although infections with these organisms occur in people who do not have HIV, the frequency of the infection rose during the early stages of the HIV epidemic.
Comparing prescription drug costs. BOISE -- In this 7 Investigation, KTVB looked at how prescriptions are priced and how you can look for the best deals in town. In looking at cash prices, which is what uninsured patients would pay, the prices can vary pretty wildly pharmacy-to-pharmacy. The cost differences KTVB found were up to hundreds of dollars per month.
The pharmaceutical industry doesn't readily disclose actual drug costs or markups, but several local pharmacies and a couple of big chains were willing to explain price variations and gave advice on saving money. Idahoans spend millions of dollars each year on prescriptions. Prescription drug spending has been one of the fastest growing components of health care in the last decade. Just in our state, the Kaiser Family Foundation reports Idahoans spent more than $877 million dollars filling more than 15 million prescriptions in 2010. The average Idahoan fills around 10 prescriptions each year.
